CULTURE-BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING
FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE TEACHERS
OF NATIVE HAWAIIAN STUDENTS
HOʻOMŌHALA ʻIKE KUMU ʻĪNANA, or HIKI, helps current teachers of Native Hawaiian students and future teachers who want to work with Native Hawaiian students to expand their knowledge so that they can meet the unique needs of their students.
HIKIʻs culture-based professional developments, trainings, and incentives help to grow pre- and in-service educators working with Native Hawaiian PK-12 students, thus addressing Hawaiʻi’s ongoing disparities in education. Research shows that teacher quality and cultural competence greatly impact student education outcomes. This is especially true for Native Hawaiians and other indigenous populations and communities of color.
HIKI is grounded in a Pedagogy of Aloha, which purports:

The Hoʻomōhala ʻIke Kumu ʻĪnana (HIKI) Professional Development (PD) Series
consists of six Professional Development courses offered over a 3-year period. Alternating theory and practice, this series familiarizes participating in-service teachers with the foundational tenets of Pedagogy of Aloha and Hawaiian Project-Based Learning (PBL) Design. All courses are culture-based and asynchronous, aligning with both traditional and contemporary education standards. Participants are expected to engage for approximately 3 hours per week in interactive online activities, in-the-environment assignments, readings, adapting current instructional practices, collecting evidence based on adaptations, and reflecting about the impact of those adaptations.
Upon successful completion of the series, participants will have earned:
up to 18 PDE3 credits (3 PDE3 credits per course) that can be applied towards reclassification (15 credits = 1 pay step)

HOW TO APPLY FOR HIKI

Space is limited and all registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis, so apply ASAP. Please note: Prior approval from a supervising administrator is needed to use this course for reclassification (Form 200-005a).
After notification of acceptance to course, applicants will receive a link to pay the $100 Course Registration Fee to Kū-A-Kanaka no later than 1/31/22
Once the course registration fee is received, we will move you from the "Wait-List" to "Registered" on the PDE3 Roster and your official enrollment will be confirmed via email instructing you to create your profile in our EA E-Learning Portal.
The Hoʻomōhala ʻIke Kumu ʻĪnana (HIKI) Teacher Recruitment Program
The Hoʻomōhala ʻIke Kumu ʻĪnana (HIKI) Teacher Recruitment Program is a personalized teacher recruitment and pre-service teacher training program designed to prepare teachers to work at schools with high concentrations of Native Hawaiian students and meet the unique needs of such students. Participants have the potential to earn culture-based Micro-Credentials issued by EA Ecoversity, a Native Hawaiian Higher Education and Career Training Program, as they complete a State Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP) of their choice to earn their Teacherʻs License.
